# Best Area to Stay in Siem Reap: Old Market vs Wat Bo vs the Resort Strip (2026)

> Wat Bo is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Old Market and quiet by 11 p.m. When the bar district or the 10-minute resort strip is the better call, area by area.

## At a Glance

- Wat Bo, on the east bank of the Siem Reap River, is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Old Market and 15 to 20 minutes by tuk-tuk from Angkor Wat.
- Pub Street, Street 08, raises the volume around 9:00 p.m. and its bars run past midnight, most until 2:00 a.m. or later at weekends.
- Charles de Gaulle Boulevard hotels such as Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra put Angkor Wat at about 10 minutes, a saving of 5 to 10 minutes over a central hotel.
- A tuk-tuk from the Charles de Gaulle hotels to the Old Market costs $3 to $5 each way, so two rides a day add $6 to $10 to a resort stay.
- Viroth's Hotel on Street 24 in Wat Bo publishes its rates, from $139 for a street-facing Deluxe room to $275 for the Suite.
- Hostel dorm beds near Pub Street at Onederz and Mad Monkey were listed at about $5 to $9 a night in 2025 and 2026.
- Amansara's 24 suites on the Road to Angkor cost roughly $1,400 to $1,650 a night in third-party listings, the top of the resort strip.
- Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport is about 50 km east of every area, a drive of 50 to 70 minutes, with an $8 airport bus and a $35 official car.
- The airport bus stops at 7 Makara Street in Wat Bo, a short walk from most Wat Bo hotels and a $2 tuk-tuk from the Old Market.

For most visitors the best area to stay in Siem Reap is Wat Bo, the residential east bank of the river, because it is the only part of town that passes both tests that matter: dinner within a 10 minute walk, and silence at 11:00 p.m. The Old Market side is better for a night out and worse for sleep. The resort strip on Charles de Gaulle Boulevard is better for a big pool and worse for everything that happens after the temples close.

Search results answer this question with a ranking of six or eight districts, each given a personality: the party quarter, the French quarter, the resort quarter. Most of those districts are three streets long, and the whole center can be crossed on foot in 25 minutes. The difference in tuk-tuk time to Angkor Wat between the closest hotel and a central one is 5 to 10 minutes, which those rankings present as a reason to choose. It is not. The useful comparison is narrower: Old Market versus Wat Bo versus the resort strip, judged by the walk to dinner, the noise at night and the number of tuk-tuk rides a day.

This guide compares those three areas, gives four or five hotel examples in each, and covers the three secondary areas briefly. The [where to stay in Siem Reap pillar](https://www.angkortourism.org/where-to-stay-in-siem-reap/) has the full hotel list by price tier. Prices, hours and transport times below were checked against operator websites and official sources in October 2026.

## The Decision Is Walking Minutes and the 11 p.m. Test, Not Distance to Angkor

Angkor Wat sits about 7 to 8 km north of the Old Market. From the Old Market, Wat Bo, Kandal Village or Sivatha Boulevard the tuk-tuk ride takes 15 to 20 minutes. From the riverside near the Royal Gardens it takes 12 to 15. From the Charles de Gaulle Boulevard resorts it takes about 10. Every vehicle passes the same checkpoint on the way in, and in December that queue adds 10 minutes from anywhere. A hotel chosen for its distance to the temples has been chosen for the least important number on the booking page.

Two other numbers decide the stay. The first is the walk to dinner. Siem Reap's restaurants, night markets and bars cluster within a kilometer of the Old Market. A hotel inside that circle means no tuk-tuk at night. A hotel outside it means two rides of $2 to $5 each, every evening, and a negotiation in the dark. The second is the noise at 11:00 p.m., the hour when anyone with a 4:30 a.m. sunrise pickup needs to be asleep. On Street 08 you hear competing sound systems. On Wat Bo Road you hear motorbikes. On Street 26 you hear a dog. On Charles de Gaulle Boulevard you hear nothing, and dinner cost $3 each way to reach.

Put those two numbers side by side and the three main areas sort themselves. The [Siem Reap neighborhoods guide](https://www.angkortourism.org/siem-reap-neighbourhoods/) describes what each part of town feels like at 7:00 a.m. as well as at night.

## Old Market and Pub Street: Best for Nights Out

The honest verdict: the right base for one or two nights of eating, drinking and shopping on foot, and the wrong base for a stay with three sunrise mornings. The Old Market, Psar Chas, is the reference point for every address in town, and Pub Street is Street 08, one block west. Everything is walkable: the market, the river path, Kandal Village 5 minutes away, both main night markets off Sivatha Boulevard. Angkor Wat is 15 to 20 minutes by tuk-tuk, and drivers wait at every corner from 4:30 a.m.

The noise is the price. Pub Street raises the volume around 9:00 p.m. and runs past midnight, most bars until 2:00 a.m. or later at weekends. The sound carries two streets in each direction. Sivatha Boulevard, the four-lane commercial road 400 meters west of the river, carries traffic from 5:00 a.m. A room facing away from both is the only fix. The [Pub Street and Old Market guide](https://www.angkortourism.org/pub-street-old-market/) covers the streets one by one, and the [Pub Street guide for people who would rather not](https://www.angkortourism.org/pub-street-guide/) says which bars are bearable.

The four examples below are listed by price, lowest first.

### 1. Onederz Siem Reap

The honest verdict: a social hostel two minutes from Pub Street. Four pools open 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., dorm beds listed at about $5 to $6.50 in 2025. The limitation: the dorms are full and social every night in high season.

### 2. Mad Monkey Siem Reap

The honest verdict: a party hostel a short walk from the bars. Rose Apple Road, 5 to 10 minutes on foot from Pub Street, two pools and a rooftop bar, dorms $5.25 to $7.25 on its own site. The limitation: the bar is the point of the place.

### 3. Memoire d'Angkor Boutique Hotel

The honest verdict: a mid-range pool hotel next to the market. 54 Sivatha Road, 48 rooms, a pool, a 3 minute walk to the Old Market, $42 to $62 for late October 2026. The limitation: street-facing rooms hear Sivatha from 5:00 a.m.

### 4. Park Hyatt Siem Reap

The honest verdict: a high-end hotel inside the Old Market grid. 3 Sivutha Boulevard, 108 rooms, $191 to $699 on 25 October 2026. The limitation: the boulevard is the busiest road in town, so street-side rooms hear it.

## Wat Bo and the East Bank: Best for Most Visitors

The honest verdict: the best balance in Siem Reap, and the default answer for first-time visitors, couples and families. Wat Bo is the residential area east of the river, named for its pagoda on Wat Bo Road. The numbered cross-streets, Street 23 to Street 27, run from Wat Bo Road down to the river and hold most of the small hotels, cafes and Khmer kitchens a visitor uses. Three bridges cross to the Old Market in 5 to 10 minutes on foot. Angkor Wat is 15 to 20 minutes by tuk-tuk, the same as from the Old Market. The airport bus stops at 7 Makara Street at the south end, so a late arrival can walk to many hotels here.

At 11:00 p.m. the cross-streets are quiet. The one bar of note on Street 26, Miss Wong, closes at midnight. Wat Bo Road is different: it is a through road with motorbikes until late and from early, so a room set back from it or on a cross-street sleeps better. The sound no hotel controls is a wedding or funeral tent in a residential street, which means amplified chanting from 5:00 a.m. for a day or more, and it happens here more often than on the commercial side. Further south, Sala Kamreuk thins into villages and gardens 7 to 10 minutes by tuk-tuk from the Old Market, where Sala Lodges and Navutu Dreams sit. The [Wat Bo area guide](https://www.angkortourism.org/wat-bo-area/) and the hotels in Wat Bo guide go street by street.

Angkor Village Hotel comes first as the example that shows the area best: wooden buildings around ponds, five minutes on foot from the Old Market, with dinner and a dance performance in the grounds. The other four follow by published nightly rate, lowest first, then those without a published rate in alphabetical order.

### 1. Angkor Village Hotel

The honest verdict: a timber hotel around ponds, with no published room-only rate. Street 26 off Wat Bo Road, a family-run hotel that says it has been in the same hands for more than 30 years, 43 rooms in Khmer-style wooden buildings with a pool and a spa, a 5 minute walk from the Old Market and 15 minutes by tuk-tuk from the Angkor park. Two-night packages start at $320. The limitation: the mid-1990s buildings have wooden stairs and no elevator mentioned on the site, the 20 square meter Petite rooms are small, and rooms nearest Wat Bo Road hear motorbikes from early morning.

### 2. Lub d Siem Reap

The honest verdict: a hostel across from the airport bus stop. 7 Makara Street, a 7 minute walk from Pub Street, a pool with a swim-up bar, dorm beds from about $5 in 2025 listings. The limitation: breakfast is not included and costs $5 to $10.

### 3. Viroth's Hotel

The honest verdict: a mid-century modern hotel with published rates. Street 24, a 7 minute walk from the Old Market, 35 rooms around a 20 meter pool, Deluxe rooms from $139 facing the street and $159 facing the pool, Suite from $275. The limitation: the city-view rooms face Street 24, and the pool is busy from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in December and January.

### 4. Maison 557

The honest verdict: a small bed-and-breakfast house rather than a hotel. 557 Wat Bo Road, a 1950s-styled property with rooms of 20 to 45 square meters and a private pool suite. Rates are not published on the site. The limitation: the address is on Wat Bo Road itself, so ask which side the room faces.

### 5. Treeline Urban Resort

The honest verdict: a design hotel at the river end of Wat Bo. Achasva Street, a 7 minute walk from the Old Market, 48 rooms and a private collection of contemporary Cambodian art. Room rates are not published, and 2026 offers ran 10 to 27 percent off from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 with advance booking. The limitation: the 30 square meter standard rooms are small for the price.

## The Resort Strip: Best for a Pool and a Temple-First Stay

The honest verdict: the right base for a stay built around the temples and a long afternoon at the pool, and the wrong one for anyone who wants to walk out to dinner. Charles de Gaulle Boulevard runs north from the Royal Gardens to the Angkor checkpoint. The hotels sit behind walls and gardens, the pools are the largest in town, and the boulevard is silent at 11:00 p.m. The Slorkram and Treang village streets along the river to the east, and Sla Kram beyond, hold the boutique and villa hotels that sell themselves as between town and temples.

What the strip costs is rides. Town is 20 to 30 minutes on foot along a road without shade, so nobody walks it, and a tuk-tuk to the Old Market costs $3 to $5 each way. Two rides a day for four days is $24 to $40, plus the time spent waiting for a driver after dinner. National Road 6 and Road 60, east and north-east of the center, are the other resort strip, with large convention hotels such as Sokha Siem Reap Resort and Borei Angkor and the same arithmetic. The Charles de Gaulle and resort strip guide and the hotels near Angkor Wat guide measure how close anyone can get.

The four examples below are listed by entry price, lowest first.

### 1. Heritage Suites Hotel

The honest verdict: a small bungalow hotel in a village street. Near Wat Polanka in Slokram, 26 rooms, bungalows with private steam rooms and some with 8 meter private pools, from $94 for late October 2026. The limitation: a residential street with nothing to walk to.

### 2. Templation

The honest verdict: a villa hotel built around private pools. Rok Rak Street in Sla Kram, 50 units, most with private pools, entry rooms $141 to $199 for 31 October 2026. The limitation: a $3 tuk-tuk each way to town, and a spread-out site.

### 3. Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra

The honest verdict: a large resort on the temple road. 238 rooms on Vithei Charles de Gaulle, what the hotel calls the largest free-form pool in Cambodia, about 10 minutes to Angkor Wat, from $151 for 1 November 2026. The limitation: a conference resort with a 25 minute unshaded walk to town.

### 4. Amansara

The honest verdict: a 24-suite retreat at the top of the price range. A 1960s royal guesthouse on the Road to Angkor, roughly $1,400 to $1,650 a night in third-party listings. The limitation: formal and hushed, with nothing to walk to.

## Riverside and the Royal Gardens: the Fourth Option

The honest verdict: the quietest central address for travelers spending more than $150 a night, and the area most rankings undercount. Pokambor Avenue runs along the west bank from the Old Market to the Royal Gardens, a 10 to 15 minute walk under trees. The hotels are set back in gardens, and Angkor Wat is 12 to 15 minutes by tuk-tuk. The four hotels here are listed by entry price, lowest first, with the one whose rate is not given here last. FCC Angkor by Avani occupies the restored 1917 governor's mansion, at $125 to $130 a night in the 2026 shoulder months, and some guests find its courtyard pool small. Shinta Mani Angkor, on Oum Khun Street, has 105 rooms around a central pool from about $160, and ten Bensley Collection villas with private lap pools and no published nightly rate. Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor has faced the gardens since 1932, with a 35 meter pool and rooms from $218 for 30 October 2026, rising to an average near $698 in December. Jaya House River Park, further north on River Road in Treang Village, has 36 rooms, two pools and airport pickup included for stays of two nights or more, about 6 minutes by tuk-tuk from town, with nothing walkable after dark. The limitation for the whole area: no cheap beds, few independent restaurants north of the market, and the gardens are unlit after 10:00 p.m., so the walk home is along the road. The riverside walk guide covers the stretch on foot.

## The Areas That Suit Fewer People

**Sok San Road and Kandal Village.** Kandal Village, Hup Guan Street, is 5 minutes west of the Old Market and silent at night, with cafes and few hotels. Sok San Road runs west from Sivatha toward Phare's big top, with hostels and guesthouses at $15 to $40 at the Sivatha end and late bars to match. The Aviary Hotel at 9 Tep Vong Street published rates of $74 to $81 with breakfast in the 2026 green season, and high-season rates need checking. The Sok San Road and Kandal Village guide has the details.

**Sivatha Boulevard and Taphul.** The practical middle, with mid-range hotels with pools and rooftop bars in the $30 to $80 range on the Taphul streets. Ask for an inner courtyard room.

**Wat Damnak.** South of Wat Bo, dark and silent by 10:00 p.m., with Cuisine Wat Damnak and Sala Lodges nearby. Angkor Wat is about 20 minutes, the longest of the central areas.

## By Situation

### You are a first-timer with three nights

Wat Bo, on a cross-street. Lub d for a hostel bed, Viroth's Hotel for a published rate and a 20 meter pool, Angkor Village Hotel for timber buildings and gardens, Treeline for design and the river. The [three-day itinerary](https://www.angkortourism.org/siem-reap-3-days-itinerary/) assumes a Wat Bo base.

### You want to be out until 1:00 a.m.

The Old Market grid. Onederz or Mad Monkey for a bed, Park Hyatt Siem Reap for a courtyard room. Plan sunrise for a later morning.

### You want a big pool and do not mind tuk-tuks

The resort strip. Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra for a large shared pool, Heritage Suites or Templation for a private one. Budget $6 to $10 a day for rides to town.

### You want quiet and a garden and can spend $150 or more

The riverside and Treang. FCC Angkor by Avani for the mansion, Shinta Mani Angkor for a 10 minute walk to town, Raffles for the 35 meter pool, Jaya House River Park for two pools and the airport pickup.

### You are traveling with children

Wat Bo or Sala Kamreuk. Sala Lodges for the two-bedroom house, Navutu Dreams for three pools. The [family hotels guide](https://www.angkortourism.org/family-hotels-siem-reap/) has the room configurations.

## What It Actually Costs

The area changes the price of a bed more than the price of a day. Dollars work everywhere, and change under $1 comes back in riel at about 4,000 to the dollar.

| Item | Old Market | Wat Bo | Resort strip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostel dorm bed | $5 to $9 | About $5 at Lub d | None |
| Mid-range room with pool | $42 to $62 (Memoire d'Angkor, late Oct.) | $53 to $92 (Rambutan, late Oct.) | $59 to $109 (Sokha, late Oct.) |
| Boutique or upper tier | $191 to $699 (Park Hyatt) | $139 to $275 (Viroth's published) | $141 to $199 entry rooms (Templation) |
| Tuk-tuk to the Old Market | None, on foot | None, on foot | $3 to $5 each way |
| Tuk-tuk to Angkor Wat | 15 to 20 minutes | 15 to 20 minutes | About 10 minutes |
| Tuk-tuk day on the small circuit | $18 to $25 | $18 to $25 | $18 to $25 |
| Airport bus | $8, then $2 tuk-tuk | $8, walk from 7 Makara Street | $8, then $3 to $5 tuk-tuk |

Not included anywhere: the Angkor Pass at $37 for one day or $62 for three, which no hotel includes unless it says so, the tip for a tuk-tuk driver who waits at the temples, usually $2 to $5 a day. The [Angkor Pass guide](https://www.angkortourism.org/angkor-pass-tickets-prices-hours/) covers the ticket.

## What Other Guides Get Wrong

1. **Choosing an area for the distance to Angkor Wat.** The gap between the resort strip and the center is 5 to 10 minutes each way, on empty roads at 5:00 a.m. Choose by the walk to dinner and the noise at night.
2. **Calling Wat Bo a quiet area without qualification.** The cross-streets are quiet. Wat Bo Road carries motorbikes from early morning, and ceremony tents can bring chanting at 5:00 a.m. Ask which side the room faces.
3. **Treating "walking distance to Pub Street" as a feature.** It is a feature until 9:00 p.m. A hotel two blocks away or across the river is a 7 minute walk and a different night's sleep.
4. **Leaving out the riverside.** The stretch from the Old Market to the Royal Gardens and up River Road is the quietest central area above $150, and most rankings fold it into the resort strip.
5. **Pricing the resort strip by the room alone.** Two tuk-tuk rides a day at $3 to $5 each add $24 to $40 to a four-night stay, plus the wait for a driver after dinner.
6. **Ignoring the new airport.** Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport is about 50 km east of every area. The airport bus stops in Wat Bo at 7 Makara Street, so many Wat Bo hotels are a short walk from the bus, while every other area adds a tuk-tuk at the end of the trip.

## Where to Go Next

With the area chosen, the [where to stay in Siem Reap pillar](https://www.angkortourism.org/where-to-stay-in-siem-reap/) narrows the hotel by price tier, and the [boutique hotels guide](https://www.angkortourism.org/boutique-hotels-siem-reap/) sorts the small Wat Bo and riverside hotels that earn the name. The [hotels with a pool guide](https://www.angkortourism.org/hotels-with-pool-siem-reap/) ranks the pools that matter at 2:00 p.m., and the [airport to city guide](https://www.angkortourism.org/siem-reap-airport-to-city/) covers getting to whichever area you picked.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the best area to stay in Siem Reap for a first visit?

Wat Bo, on the east bank of the river, for most first-time visitors. It is a 5 to 10 minute walk across a bridge to the Old Market and Pub Street, so dinner and the markets are on foot, but the cross-streets between Street 24 and Street 27 are quiet by 11:00 p.m. Angkor Wat is 15 to 20 minutes by tuk-tuk, the same as from the Old Market. The one caution is Wat Bo Road itself, a through road with motorbikes from early morning, so ask for a room on a cross-street or at the back of the building.

### Is it better to stay near Pub Street or across the river?

Across the river, unless the night out is the reason for the trip. Pub Street is Street 08, one block west of the Old Market, and its sound systems run past midnight, most until 2:00 a.m. or later at weekends. The noise carries about two streets in each direction. Wat Bo is 5 to 10 minutes away on foot and has no bar strip. A traveler who wants to be out until 1:00 a.m. and does not plan a sunrise should stay near Pub Street. Anyone with a 4:30 a.m. temple pickup should sleep across the river.

### Should I stay on Charles de Gaulle Boulevard to be close to Angkor Wat?

Only for a large pool and a temple-first stay. Charles de Gaulle Boulevard runs north from the Royal Gardens to the Angkor checkpoint, and hotels there such as Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra and Amansara put Angkor Wat at about 10 minutes. A central hotel is 15 to 20 minutes away, so the saving is 5 to 10 minutes, on empty roads at 5:00 a.m. The cost is that every dinner, coffee and market visit becomes a $3 to $5 tuk-tuk ride each way. For three nights built around temples and an afternoon pool it works. For a stay built around the town it does not.

### Is Wat Bo safe to walk at night?

The main streets are. The river path between Wat Bo and the Old Market is lit and takes 5 to 10 minutes depending on the bridge, and the Wat Bo cross-streets have restaurants, cafes and hotel entrances until about 10:00 p.m. The usual Siem Reap precautions apply: carry a bag on the side away from the road, because snatching from motorbikes is the reported risk in town, and use a tuk-tuk for anything past the lit streets after 11:00 p.m. The south end toward Wat Damnak has few streetlights, so a phone torch is part of the walk.

### Where should families stay in Siem Reap?

Wat Bo or Sala Kamreuk for most families. Wat Bo puts dinner on foot without crossing Pub Street, and its cross-streets are calmer to walk with children. Sala Kamreuk, south-east of Wat Bo and 7 to 10 minutes by tuk-tuk from the Old Market, has the garden hotels with family units, such as Sala Lodges and its two-bedroom house and Navutu Dreams and its 70 square meter family room. The resort strip on Charles de Gaulle Boulevard and National Road 6 suits families who want a large pool and will eat at the hotel most nights.

### Does the area matter for Angkor Wat sunrise?

Less than most guides suggest. Angkor Wat is 15 to 20 minutes by tuk-tuk from the Old Market, Wat Bo, Kandal Village and the Taphul streets, 12 to 15 minutes from the riverside hotels near the Royal Gardens, and about 10 minutes from the Charles de Gaulle Boulevard resorts. At 4:30 a.m. the roads are empty, and every vehicle queues at the same checkpoint, which can add 10 minutes in December. A pickup around 4:30 a.m. works from any central hotel. What the area does change is how well you slept before it.
