Bangkok to Siem Reap: Flights While the Land Border Is Closed, and What to Check Before Going Overland (2026)

In 2026 the way from Bangkok to Siem Reap is a flight of about an hour, because there is no other practical route. Every land crossing between Thailand and Cambodia has been closed since June 23, 2025, the buses that once ran 8 to 9 hours through Poipet cannot cross, and no reopening date had been announced as of October 2026. Four airlines fly the route from Bangkok’s two airports to Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, and the only real decisions are which airport, which airline and how to get the 50 km into town.

Search results lag behind events. Pages written before mid-2025 still rank for “Bangkok to Siem Reap bus” and describe a journey that cannot be made. Some booking sites still sell bus seats on the route. Viral clips announcing a reopening have circulated more than once and been denied by Thai officials. Very few pages explain what has to be true before an overland plan makes sense again.

This guide covers the border situation, the flights, the overland detours that exist, what to check if the crossing reopens, and the history of the Poipet crossing, in the past tense where it belongs. It details one route from the Siem Reap airport to city guide, which picks up after landing. Prices, hours and transport times below were checked against operator websites and official sources in October 2026.

The Border Is Closed, and Not Temporarily in the Way Search Results Imply

The distinction that matters: a closure measured in weeks and a closure measured in seasons call for different plans, and this one has lasted more than 16 months.

What happened. A long-running border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia turned into armed clashes in July 2025, with heavy fighting, airstrikes and artillery fire, and again in December 2025. Thailand closed its land crossings with Cambodia on June 23, 2025, before the fighting, and Cambodia closed its side and extended the measure across the whole border in December 2025. A ceasefire was signed on December 27, 2025. The UK government describes the situation as tense.

What is closed. All of it: Poipet-Aranyaprathet, the main tourist crossing and the route of every Bangkok to Siem Reap bus, Hat Lek-Cham Yeam on the coast, and the smaller northern crossings. Three disputed border temples are closed to visitors. Exceptions exist for security, humanitarian cases and repatriation, and the Royal Thai Navy has said such exceptions do not represent a general reopening.

What has been said about reopening. In May 2026 the Thai prime minister dismissed a viral reopening video as fake. In June 2026 the Thai government called a report of an Aranyaprathet reopening for Cambodian students fake news. An August 2026 briefing reported that Thailand’s conditions include the withdrawal of heavy weapons, demining and action against online fraud networks, that Cambodia wants all crossings reopened together, and that no timeline exists. The UK government’s advice, last updated March 19, 2026 and marked current on October 25, 2026, still says land borders and crossings “continue to be suspended.”

The travel warnings. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the Thai land border, and notes unexploded ordnance, including landmines, in the border area. The US State Department’s advisory of September 15, 2026 rates Cambodia at Level 2 overall and tells Americans to avoid areas near the Cambodian-Thai border because of unrest. Poipet sits on the border. So does Banteay Chhmar, the remote temple covered in the day trips from Siem Reap guide, where the same warning applies.

The Flights

The honest verdict: the flight is short, frequent and the only sensible way, so the decisions are the airport and the fare.

Bangkok Airways from Suvarnabhumi

The most frequent service, about three flights a day from Suvarnabhumi on current schedules, around 21 a week. It suits travelers already near Suvarnabhumi or connecting from a long-haul flight there. The limitation: it is often the dearest option in economy when booked late.

Thai AirAsia from Don Mueang

About two flights a day from Don Mueang, around 14 a week, with flight times of about an hour. The budget choice when booked early. The limitation: Don Mueang is in northern Bangkok, far from Suvarnabhumi, so it does not suit a same-day connection from a long-haul flight, and the base fare excludes checked bags.

Thai Airways from Suvarnabhumi

About four flights a week from Suvarnabhumi, on current listings. Useful for travelers connecting from a Thai Airways long-haul flight on a single ticket, with baggage checked through. The limitation: not daily, so it constrains the dates.

Cambodia Airways from Suvarnabhumi

Five flights a week from September 15, 2026, on ATR 72 turboprops, according to the airline’s announced schedule. It is the newest option and the only Cambodian carrier with a confirmed new Bangkok-Siem Reap service in 2026. The limitation: a new route with no track record yet, and the schedule and fares were not widely published when it launched. Air Cambodia also lists Bangkok in its network, but its current Siem Reap service to Bangkok could not be confirmed in October 2026.

Times and fares

The flight takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. No airline publishes a fixed fare. A travel publication’s fare check in October 2026 found fares from about $106 one way and $191 return for early November dates, with higher prices for December and January. Budget fares rise steeply within two weeks of departure, around Thai holidays and in the Chinese New Year period.

Landing at Siem Reap-Angkor

Every flight lands at Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, code SAI, which opened in October 2023 about 50 km east of the Old Market. The drive into town takes 50 to 70 minutes. The fixed-fare taxi counter charges $35 for a sedan for 1 to 3 passengers and $40 to $45 for a minivan. The shuttle bus costs $8 and ends at 7 Makara Road, in Wat Bo on the east bank, within walking distance of Pub Street. The full arrival is in the Siem Reap airport to city guide.

The flight is too short to fill in forms on board. Complete the free e-Arrival card at arrival.gov.kh before leaving for the airport in Bangkok, and either buy the $30 e-Visa at evisa.gov.kh a week ahead or carry $30 in clean US dollar notes for the visa on arrival. The Cambodia visa guide has the details and the lookalike sites to avoid.

Overland Detours That Exist

The honest verdict: possible, slow, and only worth it for travelers who want the journey for its own sake.

Via Phnom Penh by air. Flights from Bangkok to Phnom Penh’s Techo International Airport are often cheaper than flights to Siem Reap, with comparison sites showing about $48 to $68 one way. From Phnom Penh, the bus to Siem Reap takes 5.5 to 6 hours for $15 to $25. The total is a long day, and it suits travelers who want to see Phnom Penh first. The routes and operators are in Phnom Penh to Siem Reap by bus, flight or boat.

Via Laos overland. A traveler with time can go from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani, cross into Laos at Chong Mek, continue to Pakse, and then take a minivan south into Cambodia and on to Siem Reap. One October 2026 travel guide put the Bangkok to Pakse leg at about 12 hours 40 minutes and the Pakse to Siem Reap minivan at 8 to 15 hours for $33 to $47. That is two days of travel to replace a one-hour flight, with two border crossings and two sets of entry formalities. The limitation is obvious, and this route was documented by a single source in 2026, so confirm each leg locally.

Via Vietnam. The Moc Bai-Bavet crossing between Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh remained open in 2026, but from Bangkok it means flying to Ho Chi Minh City first, which is longer than flying to Siem Reap directly. It suits only a trip that was going through Vietnam anyway.

The coast. Koh Kong, on Cambodia’s southwest coast, cannot be reached from Trat while Hat Lek-Cham Yeam is closed. From inside Cambodia, it is reached via Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville.

What to Check Before Any Overland Plan, if the Border Reopens

The crossing will reopen at some point. When it does, the first weeks will produce confusion, rumors and early ticket sales. Five checks settle whether a Bangkok to Siem Reap bus is real.

  1. An announcement from both governments. The Thai side and the Cambodian side have each closed crossings at different times. A reopening is real when Thai immigration or the Thai government and Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration both announce it, with a date. A video, a Facebook post or a booking site is not an announcement. Fake reopening clips circulated in May 2026.
  2. Which crossing, and for whom. Partial reopenings often start with goods, Cambodian workers or nationals. Check that Poipet-Aranyaprathet, specifically, is open to foreign tourists, and at what hours.
  3. Your government’s advice. Poipet is on the border, inside the UK’s 20 km zone and the area the US advisory tells Americans to avoid. If that advice stands, travel there may not be covered by your insurance. Read the current advice for your nationality, and the insurer’s terms, before booking.
  4. A bus company selling seats for a confirmed date. Giant Ibis’s Bangkok service, when it ran, left Phra Sumen Road in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district at 7:45 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., took 8 to 9 hours for about 410 km, and arrived at its Siem Reap terminal on Khmer Pub Street. The fare in 2018 was $35. A schedule that still lists the service is not a confirmation. A booking for a specific date, with the company confirming that the bus crosses, is.
  5. The visa at the crossing. Check on evisa.gov.kh whether Poipet is listed as an e-Visa entry point after the reopening. An e-Visa, when accepted, avoided the problems described below.

Until all five are true, fly.

Poipet Before the Closure

The Poipet crossing was the busiest and the least loved land border in the region, and its reputation was earned. The tricks below were widely documented by travelers and guidebooks before June 2025. None of them operates while the border is closed. If the crossing reopens, some may return.

The fake visa offices. Buses and minivans from Bangkok often stopped short of the border at private offices on the Thai side, in Aranyaprathet, with signs that looked consular. They sold Cambodian visas for baht, at a price well above the official US dollar fee, and sometimes added a “service charge.” The real visa counter was on the Cambodian side, after Thai exit formalities.

The baht price at the real counter. Officers at the Cambodian visa counter were reported for years to ask for the fee in baht at a rounded-up rate, or to add a small unofficial charge for “fast processing.” Travelers who had the exact US dollar amount and waited were usually processed at the official fee.

The health form. Some travelers were directed to a desk demanding a fee for a health check or a health card. There was no such legitimate charge for tourists.

The money changers. On the Cambodian side, money changers and touts offered 3,400 riel to the dollar, against a street rate of about 4,000, and told new arrivals that dollars were not accepted in Cambodia. Dollars were, and still are, accepted everywhere, as explained in money in Siem Reap.

The free shuttle. A free shuttle from the border took arrivals to a transport depot outside Poipet, where taxis and buses to Siem Reap were sold at prices above those available in town.

The slow bus. Some cheap Bangkok to Siem Reap tickets used minibuses that drove slowly, stopped for long meals and arrived after dark, so that passengers would take the guesthouse the driver recommended. The direct companies with fixed timetables avoided this.

The general catalog of tricks that still operate in Siem Reap itself, from the tuk-tuk detour to the temple-gate guide, is in Siem Reap scams to avoid.

By Situation

You are in Bangkok with a few days for Angkor

Book Bangkok Airways from Suvarnabhumi or Thai AirAsia from Don Mueang, depending on which airport is closer to your hotel. Fill in the e-Arrival card the night before. A three-day stay is set out in the three-day Siem Reap itinerary.

You are connecting from a long-haul flight into Suvarnabhumi

Bangkok Airways or Thai Airways from the same airport, ideally on one ticket so bags go through. Allow at least three hours between flights if the tickets are separate. Do not book a Don Mueang departure on the same day.

You want to travel overland on principle

Fly to Phnom Penh and take the bus, or take the Laos route with two days to spare. Watch for an official reopening, then run the five checks above.

You are traveling on a tight budget

Thai AirAsia from Don Mueang, booked well ahead, with a cabin bag only, then the $8 shuttle into town. Compare with a flight to Phnom Penh plus the $15 to $25 bus. The daily costs in town are in what Siem Reap costs per day.

You saw a reopening announcement online

Check the source. If it is a government statement from both sides, run the five checks. If it is a video, a forum post or a booking site, ignore it and fly.

What the flight fare does not include: checked bags on Thai AirAsia, the trip to Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok, the visa, the 50 km into Siem Reap, and a SIM card at SAI at $5 to $10.

  1. “Take the bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap via Poipet.” The Poipet crossing has been closed since June 23, 2025. The route cannot be traveled, whatever a schedule page or a booking site shows.
  2. “The border is closed for a few days.” It has been closed for more than 16 months. Plan around a flight and treat any reopening as news to be verified, not expected.
  3. “Cross at Hat Lek or another crossing instead.” Every land crossing between Thailand and Cambodia is closed, not only Poipet.
  4. “The flight lands 15 minutes from town.” That was the old Siem Reap airport, closed in October 2023. Flights now land at SAI, about 50 km and 50 to 70 minutes from the Old Market.
  5. “Get the visa from the office before the border.” Those private offices in Aranyaprathet sold overpriced visas. The real visa was always sold at the Cambodian counter or online at evisa.gov.kh, for $30.
  6. “A reopening video means it is open.” Fake reopening clips circulated in 2026 and were denied by Thai officials. Only announcements from both governments count.

Where to Go Next

The landing is the easy part, and the Siem Reap airport to city guide handles the 50 km after it. The paperwork before boarding is in the Cambodia visa guide, and the travel warnings that cover the border region, along with the honest level of risk in town, are in is Siem Reap safe?. For the trip onward or home, leaving Siem Reap for Phnom Penh, Bangkok, Laos and Vietnam covers the exits, and the Siem Reap airport guide covers the terminal on the way out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Thailand-Cambodia border open in 2026?

No. Thailand closed its land crossings with Cambodia on June 23, 2025, and Cambodia closed its side as the dispute escalated into armed clashes in July and December 2025. A ceasefire was signed on December 27, 2025, but the crossings stayed shut through 2026. Thai officials denied reopening rumors in May and June 2026, and the UK government's advice, marked current in October 2026, still describes land borders and crossings as suspended. Exceptions for security, humanitarian cases and repatriation are not a general reopening, and tourists cannot use them.

Can I take a bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap?

Not while the land border is closed. The direct buses, including Giant Ibis's 7:45 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. services from Phra Sumen Road in Bangkok, crossed at Poipet, which has been closed since June 23, 2025. Giant Ibis still lists the route on its schedule page, and some booking sites still sell it, but the bus cannot cross. Do not pay for a Bangkok to Siem Reap bus ticket until both governments have announced that the crossing has reopened to foreign travelers. The practical route in 2026 is a flight of about an hour.

Which airlines fly from Bangkok to Siem Reap?

Four, on current listings. Bangkok Airways flies from Suvarnabhumi about three times a day. Thai AirAsia flies from Don Mueang about twice a day. Thai Airways flies from Suvarnabhumi about four times a week. Cambodia Airways added five weekly flights from Suvarnabhumi on ATR 72 turboprops from September 15, 2026. All land at Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, code SAI, about 50 km east of the Old Market. The flight takes about an hour. Check the departure airport before booking, because Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi are on opposite sides of Bangkok.

How much is a flight from Bangkok to Siem Reap?

Fares seen in October 2026 started at about $106 one way and $191 return for early November dates, according to one travel publication's fare check, and rise for the December and January high season and around Thai and Cambodian holidays. Budget fares on Thai AirAsia do not include checked baggage. Add the $35 fixed-fare taxi or the $8 shuttle from SAI into Siem Reap, and the $30 Cambodian tourist visa if you do not already have one. Booking ahead usually beats the last-minute fare, but no airline publishes a fixed fare for the route.

What should I check before planning to go overland if the border reopens?

Five things. First, that both the Thai and Cambodian governments have announced the reopening, not a news site or a video. Second, which crossings have reopened and for whom, since early reopenings often cover only nationals or goods. Third, your government's travel advice, because Poipet sits inside the UK's 20 km zone and the US border warning, which can affect travel insurance. Fourth, that a bus company is actually selling seats for a confirmed date. Fifth, whether evisa.gov.kh lists Poipet as an e-Visa entry point, so you can avoid the counter.

Were the Poipet border scams real?

Yes, for years. Travelers arriving at Aranyaprathet were steered to private offices on the Thai side that sold Cambodian visas in baht for well above the official price, or told the visa had to be paid in baht at a poor rate. Others were charged invented fees for health forms or fast processing. On the Cambodian side, money changers offered 3,400 riel to the dollar against a street rate of about 4,000, and free shuttles took travelers to a transport depot where taxis to Siem Reap cost more than in town. None of this operates while the crossing is closed.
